Downtown Living
Kitchen Context
The convenience of living close to work, the energy of the city core, and the industrial feel of the renovated old building were enough of a draw to bring them to this downtown condo. Although they loved the loft style feel with sloped ceiling and exposed mechanicals, the finishing of the kitchen left something to be desired.
Investing in Home
With respect to the budget, based on the expected return-on-investment at resale, we incorporated a design with a mix of “big box” cabinetry and custom made pieces. The cabinetry is a mix of a painted grey finish on the perimeter and walnut finish on the island, bringing an extra element of interest. The floating shelves were constructed out of the same wood species as the post and ceiling structure, bringing continuity to the space.
Simply Scandinavian in Bearspaw
After purchasing his childhood home, the home owner wanted to make some changes that would make it work better for his own family. The original cabinetry was set up in a “U” shape with double height counter tops that were not user friendly for their busy young family.
The Solution
After removing the old cabinets, we installed a larger kitchen window to bring more light into the space. Keeping in mind the “Scandinavian” design theme, the cabinets on the window wall were kept to a minimum with some open shelving on the right side. The majority of the storage space is in the large island, which is the hub of the family’s activities. This counter space, measuring 7’ 3” x 10’ 5”, provides 75 square feet to prepare food, eat lunch, or do homework and crafts, with space to spare.
